Top excuses for not achieving your goals

What are the top reasons for not achieving your goals? What is your excuse for not reaching your dreams?

In life, sometimes we achieve our goals and sometimes we don’t. When we don’t reach what we want, either we learn from what happened and use it to our advantage or we start coming up with excuses for not achieving what we desire. Which category do you fall into?

Top excuses for not achieving your goals

1.  Waiting for everything to be perfect

If you are waiting for everything to be perfect, then let me tell you something, this will never happen. There is a big difference between waiting for everything to be perfect and excellence. If you don’t take the necessary steps and begin doing the necessary steps to help get you closer to your goals, then you will be waiting for ever.

We humans learn by practice and by doing, not by waiting for everything to be perfect. You have to try different ways and methods so you can find what works for you. Only then you can reach excellence and begin to achieve your goals in life.

2.  I’m too old/I’m too young

When we are too young, we usually lack wisdom and when we are too old, we usually lack optimism and enthusiasm. Of course, there will always be exception, but since the majority fall in one of these categories, many end up not achieving their goals because of this prominent excuse.

What you need to do is to start looking through the history and look around you, you will begin to see various examples of people at various ages achieving great things in life. As I stated in my book “the ultimate guide to achieve your goals,” what it comes down to is your mentality, how determined you are, and your attitude, not your age.

3.  My time is limited

How often do we hear someone say “My time is limited” or “I’m too busy I don’t have enough time?” This is one of the major excuses that we often use to keep us still where we are. Look at the history of top achievers and you will realize that they also had 24 hours a day, just like you and me. The difference is that they were excellent at managing their time and taking responsibility for their lives.

If you fall in this category and you tend to always make excuses for not finding enough time to pursue your goals, then you need to learn time management techniques. This is an important skill that you must develop if you really want to reach your goals in life.

4.  I don’t have….

The “I don’t have…” excuse is another major excuse that keeps many people from achieving their goals in life. This is something that goes like:

I want to exercise, but I don’t have energy

I want to be in a healthy relationship, but I don’t have an attractive body

I want to start my own business, but I don’t have the money

It is time to make a decision and put an end to all these excuses as they don’t serve you one bit.

5.  I’m afraid to fail

Some people unfortunately focus their attention on failing more than on success. When we focus on negativity, we begin to attract similar thoughts and situations. It is the cause of lack of peace of mind, unwanted stress, and worry.

When we learn to expect the positive, we begin to move in the direction of where we want to go and we will achieve our goals in time. We begin to learn from life challenges and start to use these experiences to our advantage.

6.  I’m too tired

How often do you hear someone say, “I’m too tired to do anything?” The fact of the matter is there are things that you can do to increase your energy throughout the day and you won’t feel much tired.

Start eating smaller meals, get up one hour early to stretch and exercise, and drink more water. Once you start incorporating some energy boosters in your day, you will get rid of this “I’m too tired” excuse and you will start making plans to reach your goals.

These are the top excuses for not achieving our goals that many of us use on a daily basis. Now that you are aware of these excuses, you can put an end to them. ;)

Always remember George Carver said, “Ninety nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.”

Really nice post Dia. The first point about waiting for everything to be perfect reminded me of the excuse of waiting for the right time. There never is a right time. Action needs to be taken now. I know of people where 4-5 years of their life has passed away just ‘waiting for the right time’. Thanks for writing.

  3. I’ve used each excuse you listed Dia. The one thing that turns my excuse into action is taking a leap of faith and begin doing one simple thing each day that moves me closer to my goal!

  4. It’s really fascinating to me how many excuses people come up with for why they don’t go after their goals.

The mind, in it’s infinite potential, can also come up with infinite ways to keep us stuck inside a box. We have to be careful of these superficial limitations.

    Good post Dia.

As always, great information and right to the point.

I’ve caught myself making some of the excuses you’ve listed here. It was usually something I didn’t really want to do in the first place or on the whole other spectrum, something I was very scared to do.

I’ve really worked on myself this past year a lot and so my motto now is no more excuses. I still have some fears to face but I’ve got to face them sometime. This year is as good as any time to start.

    Have a great week Dia!

  7. I would like to add to the list – “It will not work. I cannot do this. It is beyond me”.

This is like nipping the idea in the bud. This is not about giving up – this is about not even considering taking something up!

  8. Hi Dia,

Our excuses often hide the fears associated with what we truly want to do. They bring us further away of what we truly value in life. Challenging our excuses brings us closer to ourselves and will it make a lot easier to achieve what we want.

    Thanks for sharing

I always say that it is because I don’t have enough time. Then I realise, I have plenty of time, I am just not using that time well enough.

I used to have to have a few hours to just sit and watch TV each day. Long gone are those days, instead of sitting there and doing nothing, I will watch TV and spend the time commenting and doing all of the smaller tasks I set out to do. For example, I am currently watching a show right now, doesn’t stop me from taking a look around for great articles and making my input!

Now more excuses on time, just use that time better.

Another one is being too tired, sometimes I have to have a lye down, but when I have got stuff to do I will have a pint of water and get one with the day. Believe me, 8 glasses of water a day (the recommended) will take the tiredness away!

  11. Waiting for everything to be perfect is one I fall for many times.

It’s a good point too. I think about the quality many leaders have of being willing to take chances. They do the research and study then make the best decision they can even if the circumstances aren’t perfect.

When it comes to personal goals I’m probably, okay I am guilty of waiting for everything to be perfect – especially when it comes to healthy eating goals. I can excuse that for a long, long time. But when it comes to work goals I jump in with both feet. Funny how that works.

My parents are big users of the I’m too old. They are really not that old, and I see many people their age doing great NEW things, but they can’t see past their limiting belief. It’s too bad, because there are so many new goals and experiences that they could look forward to and have in life.
