Time management

Time management

What is time management? How can you manage your time? Do you have enough time to do what you want during your day?

Time is a valuable thing that we all have, yet many people don’t know how to use it wisely. The most common statement that I hear all the time from people is “I don’t have time.” Many people keep coming up with excuses for not doing what they love to do such as reading, exercising, spending time with the family among other things. Some people, however, who are the minority, say there is not enough time to do what they want to do in their day.

You know that we all have 24 hours a day to do whatever we want. Some use their time wisely and accomplish what they want to do, others, waste their day accomplishing little to nothing.

Why do you waste your time?

Everyone knows that time management is crucial to success, but why do most people waste their time and don’t accomplish much? There are two factors that affect people and make them waste their time unfortunately, in a non-productive way:

1. Parents

As children, we get affected by our parents and the way they deal with their time.  Chances are if your parents value time and if they manage their time wisely, you learned those skills as a child. Otherwise, if your parents live randomly and waste their time in non-productive way, you get affected by that.

2. Your environment

By environment, I mean your relatives, friends, schools, media, and society. Our society affects the way we deal and manage our time. You got programmed by your parents and society to not manage your time correctly, which is why many people don’t learn proper time management skills and fail to achieve their goals.

 Benefits of time organization

1. Control of your day

When you start you day knowing what exactly you are going to do, you are gaining control over your day and using your day affectively to help you accomplish your goals.

2. Gain time for social life and activities

When you manage your time correctly, you will have lots of time to spend with your family, friends, and do recreational activities. If you fail to manage your time, you won’t be able to find the time to do what you like to do or spend as much time with your family and friends.

3. Achieve your goals

I stated in my book “the ultimage guide to achieve your goals” that when you manage your time correctly, it will be easier for you to achieve your goals. Managing your time correctly, helps you accomplish your goals faster.

I’m going to be a bit controversial, Dia. I don’t believe it’s possible to ‘waste time’! How we ‘use’ our time is up to every individual to decide. If I want to gaze out the window For 10 minutes, who can say that’s not ‘productive?’ I could be working out a problem, trying to make a decision, seeking an idea, but I’m not wasting the time.
But if I do this when there’s a meal to be cooked, or a vital job to be done, then perhaps I’m not prioritising how I use my time, correctly.
Achievmnets can’t always be measured, I’ve found lots of writing ideas when it might seem that I’m wasting my time.
What does anyone else think? Is it possible to actually waste our time?

    • Dia says:

      Hi Linda,

If you look outside the window for 10 minutes or so, or if you take some time to reflect and meditate, this is fine. When we talk about wasting our time in a non-productive way, we mean that you get side tracked while working on an important task. Let me give you an example about students. There are many students who have a lot of homework and have tests that they should study for, yet, instead of manageing their time correctly to study and finish their homework, they waste their time by watching lots of tv, checking their facebook account, going out with friends, among other reasons. A student could say, just like you said, “It is up to me how to use my time,” but at the end, if he/she don’t manage their time properly, they will end up not accomplishing the tasks that they want, hence they wasted valuable time doing “less” important things. In life, we can important things and less important things and we have to learn to prioritize. If we spend our time on the “less important” tasks, then we are really wasting our time and not helping ourselves accomplish the very important tasks we have to do. Time management is crucial if we want to achieve our goals.

I agree that time management is extremely important. I use a lot of lists which are prioritized to what is most important for me to accomplish that day. I have found if I don’t have a strategic plan of attack I can become subject to my emotions. I am sure you can relate. It sounds a little like this,”I know I need to …. but I am too tired.” Or, it could be one of the other million excuses I come up with. I am good at those.

So, Linda I think I might have to agree with Dia on this one. If it is not making me better, in one way shape or form, it is making me worse and I think that is a waste of time.

    Great Job Dia

      Hi Frank,

Exactly my friend, time management is crucial for everyone who has goals and tasks to accomplish. If we manage our time effectively, we will accomplish more and will get to finish what we have to do in a timely manner.

  3. Hi Dia,

    Great post buddy :)

Time management is a lost art. It’s easy to get caught up in doing things that aren’t geared toward your definite major purpose. People who have a strong purpose in life spend time wisely. Others tend to fritter it away.

    Thanks for sharing your insight!

Dia – Time management is so important. Since our time is limited and we never know how much we have left – we better manage it as best as we can. I have 3 kids, and my number one drive is to be around them (and my wife) as much as possible. Being that I’m employed, with a demanding career, I have to be extremely efficient to make this happen. AND I ALWAYS MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

If I weren’t so in-tuned with reaching goals – I might say that it’s impossible to waste time, too. HOWEVER, my reality is that I’m hustling hard – each minute of each day has a purpose…a purpose with a white hot desire 2Achieve my Goals. But, if someone thinks that it’s impossible – cool with me. With respect, I just have a different approach!

    Nice work, Dia!

    • Dia says:

      Hi JK,

Excellent example my friend, for sure time management is crucial for all successful people in life. We have to manage our time, so we accomplish our tasks and goals that we have set for ourselves and not waste our time doing less important issues. I love how you said, “Each minute of each day has a purpose” this is so true my friend.

  6. Time management is important. It’s true our parent never taught us to be time savers. But i think when one decides to be greater than the environmental that raised him or her and his or her current associating, they fall into website like these and listen to the wise rather than the wickedly misguided.

    • Dia says:

      Hi Ayo,

Exactly my friend, we all get involved at times in doing things that takes away from our valuable time. We just have to learn how to manage our time correctly and eliminate those time-wasters. For sure, time management also makes us plan better and makes us more productive.

  8. Hi Dia:

This is my first time on your site. Such a great topic of the post that every one talks about. But at times it feels like time flew and nothing got accomplished. Where did the time go ? Hard to guess.

I do not believe I waste time, but when you start thinking too much while working activity slows down. So focus is also very important factor. Your points the benefits of using time carefully are awesome.

I enjoyed the post. Managing time properly to save time for extra activities is very important. This is the only way you will find time to do things that you want to do for fun.
