The media’s influence on your body image

The media’s influence on your body image

How does the media influence people and their perception of themselves? Does your view of your body image changes when it doesn’t match with what the media tries to convince you?

There are millions of people who are obsessed with the way they look. They spend thousands of dollars a year on beauty products and on getting plastic surgeries to improve their looks.

Research shows that more than 80% of women over estimate their size and when they gain a few pounds, start to question their beauty and ask themselves, Am I ugly?”  This question unfortuntely is a sign that you should begin to pay attention to your internal self talk and begin to examine any negative ideas you have about your looks.

Media’s impact on your body image

The media succeeds in convincing you that there is something wrong with the way you look by trying to program your subconscious mind that there is something wrong with your body. When they keep broadcasting the same commercial over and over and you hear it more than 5 times a day, your subconscious mind starts accepting these kinds of messages.

This is why companies spend thousands of dollars on commercials about beauty products and extreme diet as they know this is a proven method to change people’s view regarding their self and body image and guess what? Since the majority of people follow the mainstream media, they start to believe in these ads about what beauty is.

Don’t let the media win

To put an end to what the media and the extreme dieting commercials try to convey, you need to change your self image. Once you start slowly correcting the false ideas you keep entertaining in your mind about your looks and body type, the media won’t be able to affect you.

You might be wondering what you need to do to get rid of this false perception. This is a wonderful question and the answer to it is:

You need to develop your self esteem and build strong personality by increasing your confidence in yourself.

Once you give your self esteem a boost, your self image will improve and you will begin to feel better about your looks and body type. The only thing that is stopping you from really loving your body and other parts of yourself is your false perception of beauty and your low self esteem.

  1. Hi, Dia,
It is true-what is served to us through media is not for real. If we keep comparing ourselves to what we see in the magazines and on TV, we will get frustrated. In truth, the persons we are comparing ourselves to have exactly the same or even more flows than we do.

  2. We do run the risk of being ‘programmed’ by media advertising. Knowing your own true worth & values, standing up for your own ‘rules’ helps defeat any external programming

  4. Author: I totally agree with you that media is corrupt. They try to tell us that we have to look a certain way, talk a certain way, act a certain way and live a certain way. Media is good at making us want the wrong things in life (Material objects).
I think that one needs to examine if media is actually helping them. Lately, I try to keep my focus off of media of any sort. I do not like media and I found that by focusing on my own life, I have been able to find greater happiness.

    Hi Dia,

I enjoyed your post and I agree developing one’s self-esteem is the way to overcome such media influence. One needs to develop their inner worth first before looking at making any changes externally.

I’ve stopped watching TV for a number of years now, and commercials, I hardly pay any attention to anymore. In fact, when I see a commercial on TV, I actually become amazed that companies are still using the same tactics, and people still do fall for them. I also did, once upon a time.

  6. I totally agree with your post. The media have a massive influence on people especially young women who are obsessed with they way they look. Celebrities are always going on diets and exercising to look the best they can, which makes women in today’s society, feel pressurised to look the same way. However, the media can not expect us to conform and live our life in misery trying to perfect our looks, especially when there are more important things to be worrying about.
