Improve your positive thinking

How to improve positive thinking?

Do you want to know how to improve your positive thinking skills? Do you want to become a positive thinker?  Do you know what the power of positive thinking and positive attitude can do to your life?

I’m sure that you know it is very common to hear people say “be positive” or “thinking positively” to someone who is anxious or desperate. The issue is that most people do not take such statements seriously because they do not know the true meaning to these phrases.

What is positive thinking?

Positive thinking is the tendency that makes your mind accept the ideas, images, and words that simplify to you what is complex where you will expect to get positive results that will lead to success. In other words, you have to see the good things in every situation and believe that you can get anything you want in your life.  Remember, for every situation, there is at least two interpretations, one positive and one negative.  You job is to choose the positive interpretation.

To overcome negative thoughts and to learn how to improve your positive thinking skills, follow the below steps:

1. Befriend people who think positively and who are optimistic. Know that optimism and pessimism are contagious, so make sure avoid pessimists.

2. Identify every negative thought that pops up into your head and immediately get rid of them before they take control of your emotions. Learn to control your thoughts, so you can control your emotions.

3. If somebody tries to make you feel depressed by saying that you can’t succeed or you can’t achieve your goals, consider his words as a challenge.

4. Take action now and avoid procrastination. When you start taking action, you will feel much happier and you will be eager to do whatever it takes to achieve your goals.

5. Do not try to do more than one job at the time. Whenever you try to do more than one job at one specific time, you will start feeling nervous, pressured and you will begin to think negatively.

6. Learn to always persevere, persist, and never give up. As I mentioned in my book, “the ultimate guide to achieve your goals” that persistence is needed if you want to achieve great  and important goals.  To start a new project is easy, but to persevere and to challenge every obstacle that comes your way is the hard part. Get into the habit of thinking positively until this skill becomes ingrained in you.

 7. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Be confident and do not allow negative thinking to stop you from accomplishing your goals and desires.

8. Listen and read everything that can help you develop your positive thinking skills and that will help you achieve your goals.

Always remember what Kahlil Gibran said, “Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.”

  1. Dia,

Hanging around positive people surely rubs off on us, I know. Zenguy who is natuarlly positive and also other personal development bloggers who write wonderfully about improving our self, I am lucky to be surrounded by positive influences and it sure helps.

I like all your posts here as they are all about helping people. Thanks so much!

    Hi Dia,
Well said. It is all too easy to tell people to “think positive.” But what does that really mean? As you point out it takes constant vigilance of our inward self-talk and a sincere effort to take command of our mind. We must seek only that which leaves us in the highest expression of ourselves if we are to make positive thinking our way of being.

I do not understand why it is so hard for me to get rid of negative thoughts. I think to myself not to think that and somewhere in between I loose it. I get angry and my feelings just turn to confusion. What can I do?

    • Dia says:

      Hi Grace,

It takes constant practice to be able to get rid of your negative thoughts. One of the best ways you can do is know that for every situation that you encounter, there are at least 2 interpreations, one positive and one negative. Instead of choosing the negative choice, choose the positive one.

Dia, very much needed post, and I thank you for laying out the key points. It is true that positivity is contagious, and the same is with pessimism. It’s important to train yourself to not internalize other people’s negativity. I’m still learning about this myself as I do often get emotionally affected by other people’s moods and reactions.

    • Dia says:

      Hi Shanaz,

Exactly, positivity and pessimism are for sure contagious. We have to train ourselves not to let people’s moods affect us and it sure takes constant practice to do that.

  5. Good job, Dia. Point 1 may be the most important. I recently got very upset with a group of my friends because they spent an hour talking about various types of doom and gloom. In general, if people dwell on their medical reports or on newspaper columnists, they aren’t serving the world with their presence. Empty lives try to draw away energy from fuller lives, and that makes these people dangerous to be around.

      Hi Gip,

I agree with you that one of the most important things we can do is to be around people who are positive and have positive energy. Unfortunately, most people don’t take the time to work on improving their positive thinking skills and let people’s moods affect them.

  6. Dia: I really liked that quote you shared by Kahlil Gibran. That is definitely a keeper and one we should all keep at the top of our minds. Great insights and I think controlling your mind is such an important ability to develop. Once we can actually gain control over our thoughts, turn them off when we need to and change them from negative to positive, we open ourselves to living life in such a different way.

  7. Dia says:

    Hi Sibyl,

Controlling our mind is an important ability to develop. At first it might be hard, but with constant practice it can be done and when we get to that point, it is such a nice thing to be able to choose the thoughts that we want to keep.
