How your thoughts affect your body

How your thoughts affect your body

Do you know that your thoughts affect your body? How your thoughts affect your health?

One of the professors in Harvard wanted to prove to his students that thoughts do affect the human body. He asked one of his students to stand in front of everybody, start breathing deeply, and close his eyes. Then the professor started talking quietly and slowly to the student, “Imagine that you have a lemon in one hand and a knife in the other hand and that there is a table in front of you.” The student nodded his head affirming that he is imagining just like what the professor has told him.

Then the professor asked the student to place the lemon on the table and then cut it. Then the professor asked the student to smell the lemon. The professor started saying, “Bring the lemon closer to your nose and smell it. Then bring the lemon close to your mouth and cut it with your teeth. Feel the bitterness in your mouth and its juice going down your mouth.” The professor continued his affirmations which made the student get chills and his face expressions became rigid.

As I stated in my book “the ultimate guide to achieve your goals” what you say to yourself and your thoughts affect how you behave, your facial expressions, your emotions, and your body. Do you see how powerful your thoughts can be?

Mind body connection

During World War Two, Hitler wanted to punish three of his soldiers because they didn’t do the orders as required. Hitler asked the specialists to use “psychological punishment” on the three soldiers. The specialists placed each of the three soldiers in a small room. Then they told all three soldiers that the rooms have poisonous gas and they would die in less than six hours. Then, the specialists closed the doors and left the soldiers alone for three hours. Then when they opened the doors after three hours, they found two of the soldiers were dead and the third one was about to die.

The specialists mentioned that all three soldiers believed that they really breathed poisonous gas. The soldiers focused on the poisonous gas, then this focus affected their hearts, increased their blood pressure, their bodies started to shiver, and then they died.

What this means that when you think about something depressing, your body is going to get affected. If you think about something that makes you happy, your body will also get affected.

It is important you also know that your brain and thoughts have the power to heal your body and overcome pain. Therefore, from now on, be ware of what thoughts you let in your head because this will affect your body and health.

I certainly think there’s a correlation here Dia. The problem is this, for me:

If I have a certain feeling that brings me to the point where it affects my body – it’s usually something that I can’t immediately shake. In time, sure – but not immediately. This is an area that I have to practice to get better with.

As I hear from whatever hurt/pain I get, it’s always after my mindset has changed – usually in the direction of acceptance.
Thank you Dia, great article as usual!

  2. Hi Dia,

I totally believe the mind and body work together. When one is out of balance the other follows.

  3. An important reminder here Dia that what we pay attention to grows. Our body does follow our mind; so the key is to keep our minds as strong and clear as possible.

    Dia,

Excellent examples of how your thoughts can affect your body. In my own experience I have noticed that when I am frustrated with a particular situation that my immune system is weakened and I always end up getting sick. As soon as my attitude improves my health improves.

It amazes me how complex and miraculous the human body is. Great Post!

  7. Hi Dia,

You are right about this one. When someone tries to put garbage in my mind, I just think to myself now if they were bring that garbage into my house I wouldn’t let them, so they I will not allow them to do that to my mind. Sometimes even myself talk I tell myself that. When i here people say I would give my right arm for that, I’m thinking be careful you might need that right arm.
thank for the reminder in what goes in the mind, shows on the body, so to speak.

I’ll keep it simple Dia, and say that we create our own realities. We create our own worlds, whether actively or subconsciously. It’s all down to us, to deal with what we see before us in the best way possible, and to create improved results for us and everyone else.

Just had to say that Dia, this post got me thinking ;-)

  9. Dia: So true… great post and great information you have here. I do agree with you that we really do have to be conscientious of the types of thoughts that are running through our minds. It impacts so much about who we are and the type of experiences we have. Interesting story about the Harvard professor. Thanks for passing it along. Great post.

  10. Hi Dia,
Yes, our body and our healthy is totally interconnected with our thoughts and state of being. I’ve noticed the regardless how many people have colds around me if I don’t want to get sick, I don’t. Could be that everyone at work is sick catching the cold from one another, but whenever they say “everyone is getting sick here. We keep on passing the cold around. ” I usually reply “I’m not getting this cold.” And I don’t. The mind is a powerful thing. :)
Thanks for this reminder. Loving blessings

That’s a powerful example, Dia. Everyone knows that ingesting Junk Food will will cause us to sputter through the day… but just as important is establishing a mental diet that has us enthusiastic about life. Physical rigor is a consequence of thoughtful vigor.

    Hello Dia!

Great post! I would say though, how your body affect your thoughts! Our mind needs energy and emotion comes from motion! The way we feel is the way our body moves.

It is difficult to change your state but when you decide to move and go out for a walk for example your mind will change focus. We need to change focus in order to be healthy!

    All the best,
    John

  13. This subject is such a BIG deal Dia, and unfortunately most people just don’t realize it until they’re much older.

Our thoughts and minds and bodies are intricately connected. They affect each other. Personally, I try to stay constantly aware of this and do what it takes to stay positive, no matter what, as our thoughts can truly drag us down.

    Great stuff Dia. :-)
