How to overcome fear permanently?

How to overcome fear permanently?

Do you feel afraid sometimes? Does fear hold you back from doing what you love to do?  How to overcome fear?

Fear is an emotion that all of us feel from one time to another, but have a hard time dealing with it. When we fear something, we feel threatened by that person or situation.

Different studies were done on the subject of fear and the results were astonishing. Fear of public speaking, fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of failure were among the top 10 fears on people’s list.

How to overcome fear

If you want to overcome fear, follow the steps below:

1. Know what and why are you afraid of

As I mentioned in my book the ultimate guide to achieve your goals” that the first thing you need to know to achieve a goal is know what it is.  If your goal is to overcome fear, you have to know what you are afraid of and why. Are you afraid of darkness? Are you afraid of water? Are you afraid of heights? Whatever your fear is, you have to know what it is. Then, you need to ask yourself the question “why?” If you are afraid of heights, ask yourself why? Is it because you feel you are going to fall? Knowing what and why you are afraid of something are the first steps to take to overcome and eliminate fear.

2. Start by facing and challenging your fears

Once you know what you fear and why, it is time to start working on conquering and eliminating the fear. If you fear public speaking, for example, then start by giving a 5 minute speech in front of people. Start by giving speech to your family and friends. Then, once you get more comfortable, you can add a few additional people.

If you are afraid of heights, then start going to high places gradually. If you are comfortable going to level 1 of the building, then go to level2, and so forth. The more you practice and face your fear, the faster you will overcome fear.

3. Change your thinking

Fear is a negative thought that you have in your mind, so you have to change the way you look at it. If you fear that you are going to fail in a project, for example, switch that thought to you are going to succeed in this project. By changing negative thoughts to positive, you are charging your mentality with positive energy, which will help you to overcome fear.

A few years ago, I knew a friend who was afraid of studying medicine because according to her, she would fail. She had the idea of failing in her head, hence she was unable to go after her goal and become a doctor. Don’t let fear keep you from doing what you love or keep you from going after your goals.

Always remember what Sven Goran Eriksson said, “The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.”

Fear seems to be a normal part of the writing life for most of us, so we have to learn to live with it if we’re going to keep creating. Thanks for sharing these tips. Here’s to feeling the fear and doing it anyway!

  2. Frank says:

I think one of the greatest lessons I ever learned was that if you don’t TRY you will never succeed. You have got to be willing to take a chance, face your fears, and accomplish your dreams. Live today like it will be the best day of your life. Destroy your fears.

  3. Dia,

Many of have rational and irrational fears that keeps us from doing our best. I too wrote a while ago called 5 ways of overcoming your fear and I guess if we want to improve our life and do personal development, we need to face the fear and do those things we are afraid of anyways. Thanks for the tips.

    Yes Dia,
Fear is great way for the counterfeit-self to keeps us small. The world-voice is constantly offering a vast array of corrosive opinions that leave you feeling insecure and nervous… “Be careful – you are only human”, “you should not expect so much from life” “you will fail” etc. etc. Our authentic-self has no use for such nonsense. When we turn within and identify with our superlatively creative nature we can shed the false fears that grip us.

    Hello Dia,
Yes I agree, fear can cripple people if they aren’t really aware of the thoughts that come along with it. In my own journey I make a consious effort on what I want to see and want to attract, this works well for me. It really is all about having that mental strength to replace those fearful thoughts that creep up and exchanging those for more positive thoughts of things you want to attract. Nice post with good tips !

    hello dia,
    how are you?
thanks for sharing this.I think taking constructive and calculated risks may be another tool to conquering our fears. I mean if it’s worth risking then it’s certainly worth going for it.
Take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the day.

  7. Dia: Great post and I couldn’t agree more. The one way to guarantee you will fail is to be fearful and not take the chances you should. Once we find real ways to overcome fear, we really can accomplish so much more than we may have ever imagined. Great list.

Dia, this is a great post. I must agree that step 1 is most difficult one and once the cause of fear is known, job is half done!

  9. Kate says:

    Hi Dia,

Fear can immobilise us so easily….and achieves so little. I think when you face your fears head on they lose some of their potency, what seems like huge demons when they are swimming around our heads turn to little blips when we face things despite fear.

    Hi Dia
Great advice and my favourite… “Start by facing and challenging your fears”
That’s why I got into Public Speaking, and what did I find?
That it’s not that scary and I had a talent for it – quel surprise!
Lesson learned? Face and challenge your fears don’t run away.

  11. Thanks Dia,

Fear is a paralyzer for many people and a huge stumbling block. It may be trite and over-used but I always like to think of the classic FDR, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” that and the idea that courage is not the absence of fear but is taking action to overcome your fear and still push on…

    thanks

    Steve

  12. Do you think we fear things because of concentrating on what we don’t want to happen Dia?
