How to live in the present?

Do you live in the present?  Can living in the present help you have peace of mind?  How to live in the present?

Living in the present is needed to live a healthy life that is filled with serenity and peace of mind.  As long as you stay living in the past or the future, you will not experience true peace of mind and anxiety will be part of your life.

When Jennifer split with her boyfriend, she remained for many months in tears.  Every night before she goes to bed and when she gets up in the morning, she kept thinking of how their relationship was, which is why it was very difficult for her to get over her lover.  She lived in the past, not the present, hence excessive stress and anxiety affected her thoughts and health. 

As I mentioned in my book “How to overcome worry and have peace of mind” that living in the present, not only helps you combat anxiety and excessive worry, but it will also help you achieve peace of mind.

  • Increased control over your thoughts and emotions
  • Enjoyment of the moment

Living in the present

If you want to learn how to live in the present to have peace of mind, follow the two steps below: 

1.      Focus

There are many different ways you can use to help you improve your concentration skills, so you can live in the present.  One of my favorite exercises is “focusing on the task.”  When you concentrate and focus on what you are doing, make sure you don’t digress or leave what you are doing until you finish what you are doing.

For example, if you are reading a book, decide to focus on reading for 10 minutes.  During those moments, allow nothing to take your focus away from the task.  As you practice and improve your concentration, the better you get at living in the moment. 

2.      Meditate

Meditation is one of the best methods that you can do to help you start living in the present and achieve peace of mind.  There are many forms of meditations you can use such as Qi Qong among others. 

When your mind is calm and clear of negative thoughts, you will find yourself mentally relaxed and able to give your best in all areas of your life. 

Finally, always remember what Terri Guillemets said, “Don’t let the past steal your present.”

    Good points. Being of one mind with your goal, with no where to go but forward. Combine focus with persistence, and anything can be accomplished.

    I tell you Dia, I have to give this meditation thing some more attempts. I’m hearing about its important all the time all over the place. I do have my own method of meditation, but even that isn’t consistent. Great reminder Dia, thank you my friend!

      Yes, meditation is really helpful as it helps to clear our thoughts and focus on deep breathing. There are many methods; you should choose the one that you feel more comfortable with. At first, it might be boring or not beneficial, but as you practice, you will start seeing the benefits of meditation. Thanks JK

    Really great points Dia and some it took me quite some time to achieve. I totally live in the present now and I can’t tell you how much better life is.

    Also finally learned to meditate and it’s brought such a peace within me. My mind chatter is practically gone. What a huge difference it really makes.

    That’s awesome that you’ve written a book on this subject. I’m sure it has helped a lot of people.

  4. Being in the present means no longer living in frustration. But being happy, content and in the moment. Like me realizing that I am typing write now on Dia’s blog who live so far away, I have to take a 24 hour flight just to visit him..but will one day soon.

    Thanks for the post! Staying present is so important to manage anxiety and agitation. I think meditation is one of the best methods to practice in order to develop this ability. I know simply focusing on my breath can do wonders when I start to have racing thoughts and get worried. By focusing on my breath I am able to recenter and regain focus on the moment.

  6. Staying in the present can be a difficult challenge for a lot of people. When I am immersed in something that I really enjoy like blogging, I have no problem staying in the present.

    When I find my mind wandering between past and future thoughts, I make sure to re-align them into the present.

    Meditation is a great tool for bringing yourself back into the present moment.

    Great tips on how to live in the present. I have short changed myself many times by not giving my full attention to the task that I have in front of me. Instead I would focus on the possible results and get side tracked and end up watching TV or doing something else non productive. By staying present you put yourself in the best position to reach your goals.

    It’s so true, so many people are stuck living in the past. It can be hard to let go of bad things that happened to us, but I’ve learned that once you do, you can really focus on the present and how to make the future better.

    I’ve learned to stay in the past only long enough to learn why and how not to let it happen again.

  10. Great words, Dia! Living in the now doesn’t mean we don’t dream and visualize the future. It doesn’t mean we never reflect on the past. Obviously there are purposes that serve us well from doing both, but to live there is unhealthy. Our greatest focus and surge of our energy must come from the moment. Thanks for sharing!

    The past is a closed book, the future is an unopened book; then why worry about them instaed of enjoying the prsent is what many people say. It is true to a greater extent.
