Types of secrets

You have to remember that there are two main types of secrets:

2. Secrets that must be told especially if there is harm to someone.

In this article, I will be talking about the first type that must be kept private and never told to anyone without permission.

Keep a secret

To learn how to keep a secret, follow the guide below:

1. Change your focus

Many people when they know a secret, they feel they have this compulsion to tell someone about it. If you have compulsion to tell a secret, then you need to change your focus. Think and focus on something else other than the secret. The more you keep focusing on telling the secret to someone, the more urge you will continue to have.

Changing focus is a powerful skill that can be developed and strengthened by studying concentration and focus. Shift your focus to a different topic. The more you start focusing on a different topic, the easier it will become for you to keep a secret.

Not only can focus help you keep a secret, but it also can improve other parts in your life as discussed in the “ultimate guide to achieve your goals.”

2. Remind yourself of your loyalty

Usually when someone tells you a secret, he is trusting you to keep it and has huge trust and respect for you. Remind yourself that if you tell the secret, then others will stop respecting you as this shows people that you can‘t be trusted when it comes to keeping a secret. People would start to wonder if when they tell you a secret, you would tell it to someone else. Would you like people to see you as someone who can’t be trusted?

3. Write it down

When you have the compulsion to tell a secret, you should learn to write it down instead. Research shows that expressing your thoughts on a piece of paper helps to reduce the urgency and the compulsion to tell a secret.

4. Avoid gossiping

One of the main reasons people tell secrets is to start gossiping about others. Know that gossiping about others doesn’t do anyone good and it is a negative behavior. If you avoid situations where gossip is common, you will start avoiding situations where you must tell a secret.

Hi Dia – I think being told a secret shows that we’re trusted. Being trust is a gift. Your simple 4-part process is excellent advise on how to keep a secret. I’ve practiced them all except for writing it down.
If the information is damaging, other considerations should be made…but in normal context – loyalty should prevail.

    Thanks Dia!

Hi Dia, I think I’m pretty good at keeping secrets. If I feel that something doesn’t need to be said, then I won’t say it, not even to my closest friends or girlfriend. There’s value in discretion, and needless gossip can really lower your self-esteem over time.

    Thanks for sharing :-)

  6. Dia,

There’s nothing that will violate the trust between two people like divulging a secret.

I liked in your opening remarks when you wrote:

“She equates having a secret with having stress. Jennifer feels if she tells the secret, then the “stress” goes away.

It’s funny how we feel that way….until after we tell the secret. Then the stress is greater for having done so.

    Enjoyed it Dia…thanks!
