How to improve your focus and concentration

How to improve focus and concentration?

Improving your focus and concentration skills is very crucial in life, especially if you are hungry for success. Without being able to focus on your goals and desires, it is unlikely that you will achieve them.

The mind is like a car, if you don’t learn to direct its attention towards what you want, then you will be wasting your mind’s energy on activities that don’t serve you well. If you are serious about achieving success in life, then you must develop and improve your focus and concentration skills on a regular basis.

As I mentioned in my book “the ultimate guide to achieve your goals” that when you develop focus, your mind becomes your servant; allowing you to direct it in any direction you desire.

Benefits of developing and improving focus and concentration

  • Improved memory
  • Improved job performance
  • Improved studying
  • Living in the present
  • Developing your psychic abilities
  • The ability to focus on any task you desire
  • Increased self esteem
  • Inner peace

Improving your focus and concentration skills

To learn how to improve your focus and concentration, follow the steps below:

1.  Pick a point of concentration

Pick an object or a point of concentration and start to focus on it. Make sure the object doesn’t have many features so your eyes won’t wander off. This point of concentration can be anything you want, an object or a person.

My usual point of concentration is usually a person where I focus on it. Not only does this help develop and improve my focus and concentration skills, but it also helps me with visualization.

2.  Focus on breathing

Focusing on breathing is a great way to improve your focus. Take five minutes a day and start doing breathing exercises. During these five minutes, focus on how you inhale, exhale, and think of nothing except your breathing.

When you find that you are able to concentrate more than the time you specified, you can increase the time from 5 to 10 minutes.

3.  Count backwards

Count from 100 to 0 backwards. Then as your focus in getting better, you can count from 200 to 0 and so on.

The key to improving focus and concentration is regular and constant practice.  As your practice these methods, you will begin to notice that your level of focusing your attention on a specific object, person, or task is much, much better.

    Hi!

Very useful tips! I have seen people who are doing multi-tasking. I think this will divide the concentration and we cannot give our 100 percent to the job we are doing. This is also one thing we need to keep in mind if we need to improve our focus. Just do one task at a time.

    Thanks,

  2. Hey Dia,

I love this article especially as it’s so relevant to me now. I used to think sorting out your life was working on areas, like relationships, health, career etc. but most of this cannot happen until you learn to focus first. Sounds strange but it’s true.

In addition I never thought about doing mental exercises to improve my focus. I’ll definitely give those a go!

  3. Dia,

I found that diet and exercise are also good for focus and concentrations. Eating the right foods, along with having a strong body leads to a cleaner mind.

With that said, I do like you suggestion of counting backwards – a great mental exercise.

  4. Dia,

I agree with Alex that diet can play a big part. For instance, I have Adult A-D-D, so it’s important I eat high-protein meals that are balanced properly. Hence, one thing that helps me is that I eat eggs (or egg substitutes for you vegans out there) every day for breakfast. The protein helps me to stay focused throughout the day. The breathing techniques are great exercises as well. I am sadly not too great at counting backward. I get distracted. SQUIRREL!

  5. We do something in our office called the power of three.

The U.S. Army discovered that if you gave more than three orders at a time, the platoon would not be effective in carrying them out. If you gave two orders at a time, the platoon was under utilized.

But if you gave them three things to do, they were working at their optimum level.

So we carry out tasks in threes, get those three things done and then start the next three.

  6. Hi Dia,
I love to take on board further tips on topics like this…..I tend to be a ‘wanderer’. I keep the Big Picture in mind to keep my long term focus in check. Tips like yours can assist my shorter term focus. Eating healthy & plenty of exercise as Alex says, is also good. Well done.

  7. Great points here Dia about improving focus and concentration. What I do when I need to focus are some breathing exercises to calm my mind and then I name 10 things or items that I see. This helps with grounding myself.

Isn’t it amazing how we can easily take breathing for granted. Deep breathing is so essential to getting back to the place of feeling centered and grounded. Nothing like a good ‘ol dose of increased oxygen for the noggin! There have been many times where deep breathing has prevented a feeling of being overwhelmed with stress. In addition to this, I have found deep breathing to be refreshing and restorative in the most mundane periods of the day.

    Great tips as usual Dia!

I think my main problem would be my breathing. Even when I meditate, I’m not able to breath the way I should. I don’t know why I find that so difficult. That’s something I definitely could use some practice with. Maybe that will also help with me being able to concentrate more on the task at hand. My mind will wander from time to time but luckily, not much.

  12. Hi Dia,

these sound like great tips to help us focus. When you refer to a person, would this be a person that we highly respect, kind of like a mentoring person?

i have done the breathing and that really does work for me.
Thanks again and blessing to you,

  13. Hi Dia,

It has been awhile, wow you have new books out! Congratulations!

I like the second point best, as sometimes when we are too busy we forget to “breath” calmly. I took “art of living” seminar, where they teach you how to breath properly and focus on it. Until then I never thought of breathing in such a way!
