How to get rid of negative thoughts

How to get rid of negative thoughts

How to get rid of negative thoughts? Is overcoming negative thinking easy or hard? Why do we have negative thoughts?

Negative thoughts are a collection of thoughts that affect your mood and the way you look at things. Negative thoughts distract you from living life to its fullest and will drain your energy.

If you think one negative thought, most likely it won’t have an effect on you, but it is the continuation of thinking negatively that affects your mood and ultimately your outer circumstances.

How to get rid of negative thoughts

As humans, we will always encounter obstacles, challenges, and frustration from time to time, so it is unlikely for anyone to get rid of negative thoughts completely and this shouldn’t be the goal of anyone.

On the other hand, what you can do is reduce negative thinking in your life by learning to think in a new, positive way.

1.  Change the way you look at things

Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change. Powerful statement isn’t? As I mentioned in my book “How to overcome worry” that there is always more than one way to look at whatever happens in our lives and there is always a positive way you can choose to look at the situation.

Let’s take an example of two people who miss their flight. Person A might think it is a curse while person B might think it is for his benefit. Now two people have experienced the same situation, but one person thought about it in a negative way while the second interpreted the situation in a positive way.

The first interpretation by person A which is negative doesn’t serve him at all while the second interpretation by person B serves him extensively because it is uplifting and positive.

That is really the basis, it requires a new thinking style.

2.  Focus in the direction where you want to go

I explained above that it takes a few negative thoughts for you to get affected by them.  It also takes thinking a few good and positive thoughts until you can begin to change your focus to what you want and desire.

Try it, think or meditate on something you like for a few minutes.  Then think another positive thought for a few more minutes and so on.  Keep doing this process for 15 to 20 minutes and you will notice that negative thoughts have decreased and you are beginning to think more harmonious and prosperous thoughts.

3.  Smile and laugh

I have talked before about the power of smiling and that as we grow, we tend to smile less than when we are children and hence negative thoughts start to cause us stress, worry, and anxiety.

Make it a habit to smile every two hours and within a short period of time, you will begin to notice how you are beginning to handle negative thinking in a more efficient way and learning how to get rid of negative thoughts slowly.

Have you ever wondered why some people are happy and have peace of mind while others keep worrying? Why do some people’s life filled with worry while others filled with happiness and peace of mind? My e-book How to have peace of mind answers those questions and teaches you the scientific ways to control and overcome worry and have peace of mind.

      Hi Kate,

Yep, we have to choose the positive always, there is no point in dwelling on the negative. Once we change our focus on what is good in our lives, then we will be able to reduce negative thinking extensively. Thanks Kate

  2. Hi Dia,

I think it is impossible to be 100% positive the whole time. I have never never never met anybody in my whole life who could achieve this. I believe we live in a bipolar universe and that there is a balance between positive and negative thinking.

What I do also believe, is that it is very powerful to not dwell on negative thoughts, but use mental methods to turnaround a positive state in a negative one, like the ones you show here.

    Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Marc,

Yep, it is impossible not to think negative thoughts and this shouldn’t be our goal. What we can do is learn to become optimists and see the positive in each situation and learn to focus on what we do want. Then we will be able to reduce negative thoughts exptensively. Thanks Marc

  3. By focusing on what’s right in my life, I’m in a better position to trade the negative thoughts for healthier, more positive ones.

    Thanks for these reminders Dia.

      Hi Alex,

Exactly my friend, once we focus on the positive in our lives, we begin to attract positivity and negative thinking will be reduced. Thanks my friend

  4. Hi Dia,
We need to have a sense of direction, we need to smile & laugh and often we need to “reframe”…..look at things from a different perspective. It’s easy to get stuck in “routine”.
When you know where you are going, the positivity builds regardless of obstacles that appear from time to time. Good stuff Dia, thank you

  9. Nicely done, Dia!

Negativity takes so much energy. It’s draining. I see it in people I know very well. It saps them of vitality, of will, of inner strength. It’s like there is this inner critic commenting in a whiny complaining voice everywhere they go criticizing everything they or others do.

Life wasn’t meant to be lived that way. Your advice will go a long way in reversing that trend in those whose minds are trapped in the muck and mud of negative thinking.

    Thanks for that, Dia!

Dia: Really great process you shared and I think it is so important that we have a technique to get rid of negative thoughts. As you mentioned, things are going to happen, but we can choose to look at them from the right perspective. I think that is great advice. Thanks for sharing it.

  11. Using the smile technique works well for me. Whenever I find myself getting angry – I try to smile for 15 seconds. It nearly always works.

Ah Dia, here you go again. Giving us some great tips, straight to the point that will help us with our negative thoughts.

I will admit that I’ve done really well for the past few years with not many negative thoughts showing up in my brain. Not many but I do have a few from time to time. I start by asking myself why I’m thinking this and then like you mentioned, I change the way I look at it. I’m constantly asking myself questions as to why I’m thinking these things and in no time at all, I’m over it.

That’s when I smile at myself and just move on.

Thanks Dia, as always, great tips.
