How to get rid of bad habits?

Do you have a bad habit that you want to overcome? What are the stages that people go through to overcome bad habits?

There is no person that is perfect. Each one of us has flaws and bad habits that we would like to get rid of. Sometimes, it could be frustrating as it takes a lot of work and commitment to stop doing something you are accustomed to doing.

Overcoming bad habits

To overcome and get rid of bad habits, follow the below steps:

1. Ignorance

At this stage, you might not be familiar with the bad habit that you have and want to get rid of. It could be that you were not aware of it or someone didn’t tell you about it or any other reason.

None of us is perfect, so you need to look at yourself and be honest. Search for the bad habits that you want to overcome. Ask yourself, do you really want to improve yourself and grow as a person?

2. Recognition

When you discover that you have a bad habit you want to overcome or one of your friends informs you of it, then know that you are passing the second phase to overcome and get rid of bad habits.

You might feel afraid or frustrated when you learn about this habit that you want to overcome and you might also start asking yourself questions like:

What my friends are going to say about me?

How will I mingle and deal with my friends who practice this habit?

3. Preparation and planning

Once your recognize the bad habit that you want to overcome, you will begin contemplating how to change this habit and when you will overcome it. You have to begin thinking of the best possible ways to overcome the bad habit as this will change your life for the better.

4. Action

At this stage, you are ready to take action and begin to take the first steps that will help you get rid of the bad habits. There are many people that plan, but fail to take action. 5. Follow up

This could be the longest of all stages. At this stage, you have to know the causes that could make you go back to the habit that you want to overcome, so you can avoid those causes in the future.

    Very good points made here. My bad habit is eating when I’m not hungry. It’s been a hard one to control. But I’m winning & it feels great!

  2. Hi Dia! It’s a good practice to replace bad habits with healthy habits. Your points are great. When we become aware of the habit we have a choice to continue with this habit or to change it. A lot of people continue with the habit out of convenience. When we make the choice to change a habit, we start to grow.

      Exactly once we practice replacing bad habits with good habits, then we know we are on the right path and on the road to improving ourselves. It is sometimes “hard” to to change a habit, but with constant practice, it is doable.

    Great advice Dia. The sad thing is that many people don’t get past parts 1 + 2. They would rather live in ignorance or neglect, because they refuse to acknowledge their bad habits and shortcomings (often to protect their egos!)

    thanks for establishing the fact that we are imperfect beings and also for emphasizing the need for us to be aware that certain habits we possess/display may not be acceptable, identify its causes and make conscious efforts or plans to work on improving ourselves.

      Exactly my friend, we have to realize that we are imperfect beings. Once we recognize that we do possess habits that we don’t like about ourselfs and we want to change, then this is half the battle.

    Recognizing that we have a bad habit and being aware of it very big first step, once we acknowledge it, 50% of work is already done towards the changing it.

    I have seen many people living as there is nothing wrong with what are they doing, now that is not so good.

      I agree my friend, recognizing that we do have a bad habit is half the battle and 50% of the work. Then we just need to take steps to overcome it.

    Great points, Dia. Ignorance is not a bad word… it simply means we are ignoring the facts. When we wake up and accept our own ignorance we are opening up for marvelous breakthroughs

      I agree my friend, once we open our eyes and recognize that we have bad habits and take actions, then we are on waking up and will get great results.

    Great action list you have set out.

    I think that self awareness is the key.
    When you point out to an inexperienced Public Speaker vthat they are constantly pushing up their glasses and it is distracting… it only takes a short time before they stop.

    Once you point it out they are aware and can then take control.

  11. I think recognition is where it all begins that without the proper mindset, you’ll never know how a seemingly innocent habit is actually a negatively contributing factor in your life. A great way to understand the root of your negative habits is to start taking note of the symptoms of that habit. Ex: If you’re out of shape and can’t take a flight of stairs, generally that’s a symptoms of the root cause (not exercising enough or eating properly).

    As far as taking Action, that requires a discipline that needs to be formed through time and knowledge.
