How to encourage someone?

How to encourage someone?

Do your words have power? How to encourage someone?

Few people make an effort to say something positive to lift somebody’s mood up. When you encourage others, you are helping them to develop self confidence. If a few words of encouragement can help others and make a positive difference in their lives, why not do it all the time?

Words of encouragement

If your goal is to learn how to encourage someone, follow the quick below guide:

1. Praise

Do you know the power of praise? When you praise someone, you are motivating the other individual to give his best. For instance, imagine you are a manager who keep criticizing his employees at all times. Do you think your employees will progress and improve their performance? Their fear could cripple them and when they become afraid of you, they will not give their best. Praising and eulogizing your employees, for example, will push them to give their best, be creative, and be innovative.

2. Show people their strength

You could show people their strength indirectly in a short period of time, however, it could leave a lasting impression and could have a huge impact on them. Always focus on the positive side of people. When you show people their strength and their competence, you are helping make a positive difference in their lives.

3. Show appreciation

Showing appreciation for other’s works makes people happy. People will give their best if they know that they are appreciated. In my previous job, one of the ways that my manager used to do to show his appreciation for our work is allow us to leave early on Fridays. As a result, everyone’s performance improved.

4. Believe in them

I mentioned in my book “the ultimate guide to achieve your goals” that having belief in one’s self is crucial for success. This belief can be strengthened by other people’s belief in you. If other people’s belief in you is helpful to you, why don’t you start doing the same and help people believe in themselves? Most people go through some time where they feel down or helpless. You should help others believe in themselves, especially when they are feeling down.

For example, I know a singer who many people told him to give up on his dream of becoming a singer and find a better career. No one believed in him except his friend who kept on encouraging him and pushing him to give his best. Now, after he became a popular and successful singer, he always mentions how his friend’s belief in him helped him succeed.

Your belief in someone and words of encouragement could do the same in someone’s life, so keep that in mind.

5. Be a positive role model

Do you have someone in your life who is positive and lifts your mood up constantly? Many people get encouraged by others due to their positive attitude. When you are projecting positive attitude, your positive energy will have an effect on others automatically as well.

Remember, we sympathize with others who face hunger, but many tend to forget about the millions who go to sleep hungry for a word of encouragement.

Encouragement is something we all need, but not many people know how to generate it within themselves. They usually turn to quick fixes such as coffee to give them a shot of motivation. But it doesn’t last.

I prefer to encourage myself through visualisation; I see myself working through my day, being super-productive with my tasks, and calmly dealing with any setbacks that occur. I try and teach this to others if they have trouble themselves.

Thanks for the read Dia, amazing work as always :-)

    Dia,

This was right on time. I have actually been studying the exact same topic in a post I was planning on writing. It is really important to have this skill especially today where the world is filled with so much negativity. To be able to give someone hope in a hopeless situation is priceless.

These tips will help people do just that for years to come. I know they have helped me.

    Thanks

  3. Show people their strength–I think this one is critical Dia. In fact, I believe the main key to it is making sure you give people VERY specific feedback regarding what their strengths are. Generalities don’t help much, but specifics can go a long ways.

    Always appreciate your words Dia.

  4. Hi Dia,

    Nice post!

I have a cousin who is very encouraging. If I am down or in a bad mood, she can get me out of that slump. She has that gift of encouraging others. I am working on it! :)

I do some of the things that you mention in your post, but I do not do them enough. I would love to be a genuine encourager.

    Take care,

    Evelyn Parham

  5. Dia: Such an important message. So often we are focused on ourselves and what we are trying to accomplish, but we can really live life in the greatest way if we focus our attention on other people and how we can encourage them and make them feel great. I loved the tips.

Being a positive role model is so important. You never know who is watching and learning. As a volunteer, I work with high school kids and try to keep this in the forefront of my mind.

    • Dia says:

      Hi Lisa,

Exactly, we have to be aware of our behaviors as others might look up to us. When we are being positive and emit positive energy in the company of someone, we are helping that individual to start thinking in a positive way, so he/she can change their life for the better.

    Dia,

I really connect with this post! I recently read the book Balcony People, which is about always encouraging and cheering others on in life. We can be a balcony person or a basement person. I have learned to try and focus on the positive, be more enthusiastic, and never shut anyone’s dream down. This has not only helped me be much more positive but hopefully has helped others as well.

      Hi Joe,

For sure my friend, “never shut anyone’s dream down” this is powerful. Many people unfortunately try to rob others of their dreams and goals. They discourage people instead of encouraging them. If we want success, we have got to help others. This is all energy my friend…

I try my best to practice each of these “ways”. I find that encouraging others somehow gifts me with a touch of self induced encouragement = Now that’s a win/win!

People lose track of their great qualities…I personally find it part of my personal responsibility to make sure that I give my positive feedback – hopefully encouraging them and re-introducing them to their greatness.

    Great stuff Dia!

      Hi JK,

Exactly my friend, when encourage others, we are emitting positive energy and it is a win/win situation as we affect others positively. Encouraging others could make a huge difference in their lives as no one knows what our words can do to someone. Our words could be the “words of inpsiration” for the other person and end up changhing this person’s life in a positive way for ever.

    Hello!

These are very helpful tips! Sometimes we don’t know what to do when people disappoint us. But as you said we should always see and focus on the positive side of people. We can make them feel better and unique!

    Thanks for sharing,

    John

    Hi John,

For sure, focusing on the positive side of people helps eliminate problems and really helps the positive energy to stay flowing. We also will make a positive difference in someone’s life. Thanks John

Great to see encouragement back en vogue. I think to encourage keep it simple – focus on what efforts a person is making, show them the progress they’ve made, inspire their mind or feelings to reach for more, and let them know you are on their side (that one alone is often the wind behind our backs). Above all let them know you believe in them. Having someone trusting in what we can achieve skyrockets confidence. Fabulous post Dia, a real shot in the arm for positivity.
