How to deal with boredom

How to deal with boredom

Do you get bored at home? Does boredom affect your life? How to deal with boredom?

Do you sometimes feel that you don’t have any desire to speak or do anything? When someone asks you about life, do you usually say statements like life is boring, I’m so bared, I don’t know what to do?

All of these statements indicate that boredom affects you and your life in some way. You might get bored at home or work and in most cases, you might not know the reasons that cause your boredom. To deal with boredom, you first have to learn about the causes.

Causes of boredom

1. Not having a goal in life

Most people who suffer from boredom don’t have a specific goal that they want to accomplish or limit their goal to one aspect in life. There are people for example, who focus on their work and in the process, ignore other important categories in their lives like their health, social life, among others.

2. Daily routine

Daily routine is when you do the same tasks every single day without any change.

3. Feeling dissatisfied

Many times you might not be happy to do some required tasks that are required of you to do.

4. Your surroundings

You might be with people who suffer from boredom. As you know boredom is contagious.

I’m so bored

To learn how to deal and overcome boredom, follow the guide below:

1. Have a goal in life

Have you ever asked yourself what are your goals in life? How can you achieve your goals? In my book “the ultimate guide to achieve your goals” I stated that having a goal is crucial for success.  After all, how can you achieve success without knowing what you want? When you have a goal in life, then you would focus your time on achieving your goal.

2. Manage your time

When you decide on a goal and you know what you want in your life, then you need to learn to manage your time effectively. Organizing your time will help you to work on achieving your goals and in the process you will be busy and boredom will not be part of your day.

3. Change your attitude

Sometimes in life, you might be compelled to do some tasks that you don’t like. In this situation, ask yourself what is the best thing that can happen if you do it and how it can benefit you. By focusing on the positive outcome of doing a task you don’t like, you are overcoming your boredom from doing something you don’t like.

4. Surround yourself with success

Surround yourself with people who are optimistic and successful in life. Just like boredom is contagious, success is contagious as well.

5. Break your daily routine

To overcome boredom, breaking your daily routine from time to time is beneficial. Eat at a different restaurant, wear something new, or visit a friend that you have not seen for a while.

6. Learn something new

During your spare time, learn something new to help you in your life such as learning a new language, communication skills, computers, read book, meditate, or anything else you might think of.

Always remember what Viggo Mortensen said, “There’s no excuse to be bored. Sad, yes. Angry, yes. Depressed, yes. Crazy, yes. But there’s no excuse for boredom, ever.”

You know Dia, I can’t recall the last time I said “I’m bored”. I guess because I have so much going on. I’m on the constant move: I’m playing with the kids, doing something fun, researching new stuff, contributing to goal achievements, and so on. Hmmmmm, as I ponder – I guess I don’t dance with boredom because I basically live under the 5 tips you shared above.

  2. All good ideas Dia. I would add one more: Follow your passion. When we are engaged with our passion, boredom doesn’t have a chance!

Great message. Dia. If anyone finds themselves saying “I’m bored” it is time to take a good look at what they are up to in life.

    • Dia says:

      Hi Rob,

That is right my friend. Boredom is caused by the person’s actions in life like not having a goal. By examing one’s life and how the person spends his/her time, they would know why they get bored sometimes.

  4. You are right, there is no reason to get bored. I like number 5. Break your daily routine. We all need to get out of our comfort zone at times. We can get so busy that we forget to change our routine. Even if this means going to the park and swinging on a swing. I say when you think you are bored do something fun or silly. It makes you feel alive again.
Thanks Dia, this is a subject people need to learn to get over!

  5. LOVE that quote at the end Dia, spot on bro. Although I think everything in your list has major relevance, I’d say the idea of ‘having a goal’ is easily the most important to counteracting boredom. As a blogger, I’m sure you’re never bored. Stuff is swirling around in your mind all the time. I experience these same feelings and such action and thought keeps me happy and driven all the time.

Honestly, I really cannot remember the last time I was bored…

May we all have worthy goals.

    Good read buddy.

Dia, this post creeps up on you and you find yourself thinking later, ‘When do I get bored and why’? So a real gem of a post as it works its way into you. The answer to the question was that I find that when not enough is happening as quickly as I perceive it should, I get itchy feet and bored. I need to re-configure my expectations to allow more natural development. Your post has helped me ask a question I didn’t know I had to ask and solve a problem I didn’t know I had. That makes it top quality at every level. For that accept my great thanks Dia.

  9. Dia: I thought this was a really good post and did a great job of explaining the need to have a purpose. I thought your suggestion to have a goal in life was a great suggestion. It really is a way to always ensure that you are working toward something and there really is no place for boredom. Once you figure out your purpose and what you are passionate about, there is just not enough room for boredom. Great points here.

    • Dia says:

      Hi Sibyl,

Exactly my friend, once we have goals in life, then we would be busy pursuing these goals, hence there is no room for boredom. The important thing is to have a goal.
