How to conquer your fears

How to conquer your fears

Are fears difficult to overcome? How to conquer your fears?

Fear cripples many people in daily life. We fear things that might happen to us or things that we might fail in, so handling fear becomes a necessity for many of us. Conquering your fears becomes easier when you realize that the basis of fears is a result of your thinking.

The question people tend to ask is “how to overcome my fears?” The answer to this question varies from person to person. There are more than one method to conquer your fears and you have to find out what works for you.

In this article, I will give you some of the methods you can use to reduce and hopefully conquer your fears.

How to conquer your fears

Face your fears

One of the best methods that I personally use to conquer my fears is though facing them. When I used to be afraid of failure, I used to avoid getting outside of my comfort zone. Questions like “What if I fail?” What if I don’t succeed? What if it doesn’t work out?” were always on my mind.

I used to sit and keep worrying. Then when I reach a point where worry and anxiety has reached its highest level, I would then make a firm decision to go with the flow and face my fear by taking action.

I would ask myself “If I sit and keep worrying, is it going to change anything?” The answer is of course, “No.” Then, I would say to myself “Since being afraid is crippling me, how can I conquer it?” The usual answer that I come up with is “you have got to face your fear.”

This “firm” decision to face whatever I’m afraid of has helped me conquer many fears. Not only that, but it also has helped me reduce worry and anxiety extensively in daily life.

One step at the time

When you want to learn how to conquer your fears, realize that it is one step at the time. You can’t just decide to conquer your fear and eliminate that fear completely from the first time. It is a step by step process.

For instance, when I wanted to face my fear as I mentioned in the previous example, I didn’t succeed from the first time. I had to practice and fail many times until I got used to facing my fear directly.

Look for the lessons

Whenever I decide that I want to conquer a fear that I have in my own life, I ask myself a few important questions such as:

1. What benefit will I gain once I conquer my fear?

2. What does this fear trying to teach me about myself?

3. How can this fear impact my life?

Once I focus on the advantages that I will gain, I begin to see the benefits which will help me grow in me daily life.

Next time you have a fear that you want to eliminate, begin to face it and look for the lessons the fear is trying to teach you. By facing your fears, you will be on your way to conquering your fears slowly and steadily.

    hey, Dia

I see what your saying. I agree, and think the best ways to conquer your fear is to look it straight in the face and deal with it.

I talked to a woman from Kenya and she said that before men would marry the woman, they would have to go kill a lion. This was a sign of there man hood and after successfully doing so with a small group they were now qualified to marry.

I would think after you have faced a lion then there is nothing that you are afraid of.

    anyway good points.

    Hi Dia,

As someone who spent many years in constant fear, I could really resonate with your post. The biggest fear for me was of speaking, because I would be afraid I would stutter. So in order to face these fears, I had to do the one thing that I was frightened of doing, which was to speak. So I would force myself to go into speaking situations. I believe that when we undertake any program to overcome our fears, a big part of it has to involve doing what we are scared of doing.

    Thanks for another brilk

  4. Hi Dia,
…..and thankyou for your thoughts on ‘fear’. As I progress through Life I am becoming more aware that many, maybe most, of ‘fears’ fall into the “excuse category”…..fears are threatening & many are valid however excuses are the real things that hold us back.

Okay Dia, you’re talking to me. I still have some fears I need to face and I will. Eventually that is.

Your questions make valid points but for one of my fears I’m still not sure how to address it. I have a fear of speaking in front of people. I know I can join like Toastmasters to help with that but that even makes me fearful.

I get so nervous that I forget what I’m suppose to say. Reading what you want to say to me is not a great way to make a presentation, at least it isn’t in my view. I’ve seen people who are also fearful who are reading and my heart goes out to them. I still don’t know what I’m going to do about this issue.

Your advice is sound, I just need to take it right! Feel he fear and do it anyway right!

Indeed, facing your fears is the best thing you can do. The worst thing is running away from them. If we learn to take lessons from our fears and failures, we will move on and improve.

I always feel that fear is rooted in the concept of self. We don’t feel we are capable enough to face the situation and once we overcome “that” fear of our lack of abilities. We need to have a clear concept of ourselves and see what we can do and that if we try we can overcome it. The first step for me is working on ourselves and the belief that we can do this!
