How to become self aware?
What is self awareness? Is self awareness important? How to become self aware?
Self awareness is the process where you become aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Self awareness helps you examine your personality, behaviors, opinions and the process of how you talk to yourself.
A study that was done on inner self talk found that more than 80% of our self talk is negative, which is one of the main factors people experience stress and why most people don’t accomplish their goals in life.
People usually spend most of their time focusing on what they don’t want and on the problems that they encounter in their lives because they are not aware of the effects negative statements have on their subconscious mind. They keep focusing on what is wrong in their jobs, relationships, and health.
As I mentioned in my book “the ultimate guide to achieve your goals” to be able to change your life and accomplish your goals, you have to be aware of how you talk to yourself first and what statements you use.
Developing self awareness
To learn how to become self aware to avoid negative self talk, follow the quick guide below:
1. Raise your awareness
Without awareness, you won’t be able to change your self talk. As you recognize and become aware of what statements you use and why, you will be able to begin to change your self talk to something more positive. Become aware of how you talk to yourself and what negative statements you constantly use to yourself.
Recognizing the language you use is the main key to start changing your current negative self talk to positive. After all, how can you change something without being aware of it?
2. Substitute negative with positive
Now that you are aware of what statements you keep repeating to yourself which are programming your subconscious mind, it is time to switch the negative statements to something more positive. For example, instead of saying “What is wrong with me?” say “What is right with me?” The more you begin to change your focus from the negative to positive; you are re-programming your subconscious mind with powerful statements that can have a huge impact on your life.
Remember you have to learn to focus on what is going well for you in your life and on what you desire to accomplish.
3. Practice
After you have become aware of what negative statements you want to change in your life and started substituting the negative with the positive, it is time to practice and keep on repeating such statements.
The subconscious mind gets programmed by repetition. When you program your subconscious mind with positive statements, then these statements become part of you and become a habit of yours.
Finally, remember that you inner world affects your outer world. If you want to change your outer world, start with changing your inner world.

Hey Dia –
Good topic here. I like to think I’m self-aware, but I honestly also question if I’m as aware as I think – or do I paint myself a picture of what I want to see. Just being honest!
I love your simple approach to becoming more self aware. Good stuff and certain stuff I need to pay attention to.
Thank you Dia!

JK Allen, you are certainly self aware as is evident in every thing that you write and comment.
Coming to this post, it was a good one asking us to do that very important thing of becoming self aware. This was the thing that was done by rishis and yogis in the earlier days. But today each one of us can do it. All that we need to do is simply stay in silence for a few moments and introspect ourselves. we at the end find that we have known a lot many things about ourselves which we earlier did not knew or have neglected.

Hi JK,
Yep, we have got to pay attention to what thoughts keep playing in our heads and of our habits, behaviors etc… The more we start to recognize, the easier it will be to start making positive changes in the areas where we want to improve in our lives. Thanks JK

Hey Dia, a lot of what you say is very helpful. If we want to achieve goals and ambitions, we have to be aware of what to do, how we do it, when we do it, and what to change if need be. If we don’t this awareness, we won’t be able to fully achieve our goals.
Similarly, if we don’t know what needs changing, how can we ever hope to consciously change?
Great read Dia

Exactly my friend, self awareness is crucial if we want to achieve great goals in life. Otherwise, when we face obstacles, we won’t know how to handle them. Thanks Stu
Hi Dia,
Well said, clear and concise. Take the time to ask, “Who am I” and listen. We can translate our infinitely unique style into tangible expressions in our personality. When we learn to recognize the self talk we are using, we are empowered to experience incredible prosperity in all areas of our lives.

Dia,
I love the tips you provided in this post. The concept of replacing the negative with the positive give people the power to control what decisions they make and their reactions to the challenges life throw at them. This was a great post Dia.

Hi Dia, I like this lots. When I talk to myself I now listen to what I am saying. By doing this I can stop any negative talk that I do. Sometimes I think we hear ourselves talking, but we forget to really listen to our own words. Guess you could call this raising my awareness? What you are saying here is so important if we what true happiness. Thank you.
Hi Debbie,
Exactly my friend, once we start paying attention to what words we use, what actions we take, it will become easier for us to get rid of negativity. Otherwise, without self awareness, we can’t change the negative thoughts and behaviors we have. Thanks Debbie

I think there are levels of self awareness. When you first start trying to achieve a higher state of consciousness it’s easy to pick the low hanging fruit (i.e have awareness about the obvious in your life). I think it takes practice to begin to pick up on the subtle ways that you might be on auto pilot and this is often where you can gain real benefit.

Practice is necessary for sure. Without practicing to change our negative self talk, most people would revert to their old way of thinking. It takes practice and repetition to program our subconscious mind with positivity and with what we desire. Thanks Riley

Hi Dia,
Even with all of the personal development material that I have consumed I still get the negative self-talk bug. My response to it is complete and total awareness that I am doing it.
This seems to help me re-align my thoughts with more empowering ones. Thanks…

Hey Dia,
I’m a strong believer in the power of your thoughts and words. Life and death is in the power of the tongue. Speak things as though they are. I try my hardest to operate out of this. Sometimes I back-slide and find myself focusing on the negative, but quickly that is transitioned in to the positive.
Energy is contageous. I like to surround myself by positive energetic people and I like to give off that same energy.
I’ll admit I have my days, but I try not to stay in a funk for too long.
Thanks for this!

Hi Dia,
This is one of my favorite topics. It’s extremely important for us to practice self awareness to be able to grow and transform. I practice self awareness throughout the day and I’m always impressed by the stuff that I still hear myself saying. Like you said, constant practice is crucial.
Thanks for this great reminder. Loving blessings!

One area I’ve really been working on recently has helped me tremendously with substituting negative with positive. I’ve really been making an effort to focus on gratitude. It sounds easy to do, but it’s so easy to let day to day things consume your thoughts, and instead of gratitude, you’re focusing on negative things.
I find that when I really think about what I’m grateful for, there’s no room for negative thinking and that’s had a huge impact in my life. Besides feeling positive and happy, it’s increased both my self-awareness and my awareness of what’s going on around me, and that’s allowed me to notice opportunities that I would normally have missed!
