Effects of stress on the body

Effects of stress on the body

What are the effects of stress on the body? Can anxiety and stress really affect our bodies and well being?

Studies show that we get around 60,000 thoughts a day; over 80% of these thoughts are negative. As we grow, the negative thoughts grow within most of us. The more negative thoughts grow within us, the more we experience stress effects on our bodies. That sounds scary right?

Thoughts about lack of money, health problems, relationships fights and arguments keep affecting millions of people on a daily basis so no wonder why more than 80% of our thoughts are negative.

Effects of stress on the body

Imagine you wake up one day to find there is no hot water. Then when you want to leave for work, you notice that you have a flat tire. Then you decide to change your flat tire and when you get to work later on, you find that you are late for the meeting.

How will you feel then? Will you be among the very few who are able to control their thoughts and emotions so stress doesn’t affect your body? Or you will be among the majority who get affected easily by life events?

I stated in my book “How to overcome worry and have peace of mind” that some types of stress and anxiety are good for our bodies as they help us avoid danger. However, the majority of the stress that we keep encountering in daily life is unfortunately negative which tends to have negative effect on our bodies and health.

Stress Effects on health and body

According to various studies about 75% of doctor visits to the hospitals and clinics are due to stress, anxiety, worry, and issues that deal with human emotions.

Stress effects on the body are humungous:

  • Ulcer
  • Heart problems
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Constant worry and anxiety
  • Asthma

As you can see from the above, stress and anxiety have serious effects on our bodies and if you don’t learn how to deal with stress and anxiety in a more efficient way, then your health might suffer.

Now that you know what the effects of stress on your body do to your health and immune system, you are in a place to start taking charge of your life and your health.

  1. Dia,

One way my body reacts to stress is it refuses to sleep. When this happens I try to find more time to relax, and more time to rest, to get my stress under control.

Stress can be of the worse health issues we face, but can be avoided with a little self awareness and prayer.

  2. Dia,

This is a fact. Stress kills. Years ago I was in a bad relationship, I hated my job and was having financial problems. Soon enough I actually started to get heart arrhythmia. After being hospitalized for a few days the doctors found nothing specifically wrong and it was chalked up to stress. Now more than 10 years later, I am fairly stress free and have had no recurring issues.

    Yep. Stress kills.

    Dia,

When I am stress, I have this heaviness and pain at the base of my neck and shoulders. I feel as if I have a ton on my shoulders. This is an indication that I should lighten up. When I reach this stress stage, I will consciously look for the reasons why I feel this way and seek out ways to alleviate it.

I agree completely. The stress causes by our negative thoughts can have a huge impact on our health. Negative thoughts can make us feel stressed and even ill in the long run.

It is the illness of this age and having peace of mind with the attitude of gratitude can help to control worry and feel better.

    Hey Dia,

This is something that has definitely been affecting me more lately. I’ve been fairly stressed out, for no particular reason! The solution for me is often just to meditate and relax. If I can consciously do that, and my stress levels evaporatate.

    Thanks for the great tips.

  7. Hi Dia,
Stress is a killer. You have covered this topic well.I try to keep my thoughts calm even when my body isn’t. I’ve got a few ‘concerns’ at present that are starting to weigh & I am noticing the effect on my body…..I think happy thoughts, calming thoughts & draw on my internal strength. I know that things will be right at the end of the day. Thank you.

    Hi!

Thank you for drawing attention towards the most ignored aspect of everyday life-Stress. Nobody actually wants to address this problem. I feel that one must always be aware of what the body is undergoing and adjust the lifestyle according to it.

  9. I like the connection you made to controlling emotions and stress.

You made me realize just how connected the two of those things are to each other. Often having the control to understand your emotions, the emotions of others, and how to empathize with others can greatly improve the effect stress can have on you on a relationship or personal level.

    Loved your tips.

I know first hand how powerful stress is on the body. Back in 2005 I woke up one morning barely able to move the right side of my mouth. By the end of the day I could barely control my eye (blinking). I got Bells Palsy, which is said to be stressed induced.

After following a rigorous diet for a few days I was cured. However, it was a very scary experience while I Had no control over the right side of my face for about 5 days.

Great advice Dia! Thanks for sharing sir!

    Dia,

Stress can be derailing in your life. It can cause you more harm than most people take the time realize. Stress can shave years off of your life and make you a prime candidate for all types of diseases like you mentioned above. People have to take the necessary precautions to make sure they keep their stress levels under control.

On of my favorite stress relievers recently has been exercise. I just get up and go running. There is nothing better, for me, than a quick jog to clear my head.
