Incident stress
Do you know that incident stress syndrome is one of the causes for anxiety and worry? What is incident stress?
Incident stress is when you experience an event or a situation that makes you anxious, stressful, or worried.
Nancy was driving back home during a snow storm, where she came across an icy spot. Her car swerved right and left and hit a tree. This incident stress had a big impact on Nancy where she stayed a few weeks without driving due to the trauma this incident has caused her.
Think of an incident that caused you anxiety and stress. Imagine if you get up one day to go to work, but you find you have a flat tire. You go to change the tire, but then realize that you forgot to call your manager to let him know you are going to be late, so you start worrying over what your boss is going to say to you.
As I mentioned in my book “How to overcome worry and have peace of mind” that sometimes, you might encounter distressful situations all at once. One of the best ways to handle such issues is through positive programming and learning how to interpret situations in a positive way.
Symptoms of incident stress
- Unusual behavior
- Anxiety and worry
- Isolation
- Lack of focus
Dealing with incident stress
If your goal is to learn how to deal with incident stress, follow the guide below:
1. Positive programming
Learn to interpret situations in a positive way. For every event and situation that happens to you there is a positive way to look at it. For example, two people who lost their jobs might think of the situation differently. Person A might view it as a tragic event, while person B might view it as a temporary set back and as an opportunity to get a better job.
I personally have made it a habit into my life to look for the positive in every negative situation that I encounter. When something undesirable happens, I ask myself, “What can I learn from this event? How would I feel and behave once this stressful event is over and solved?“ At first it was a challenge to see the positive in situations, but as I practiced
and kept applying this concept into my life, it has become a positive habit and part of my personality. The good thing is you can do the same in your life.
2. Meditation
I have said it before and will say it again, meditation is one of the most beneficial methods you can use to clear your mind from all the negative thoughts and to deal with incident stress.
Sit in a quiet place, preferably alone, focus on breathing for a few minutes. Clear your mind from all the negative thoughts you have. Ponder the event you have experienced. This means, you have to separate yourself from the incident you have experienced and look at the situation with unbiased view. This will help you be more rational about finding a solution.
3. Surround yourself with people you love
Studies shows that it is very crucial to surround yourself with members of your family, friends, and people you trust as they can offer their support and help you deal with the incident stress you have experienced.
For instance, Jennifer mentions when she got dismissed from her University due to her low average, she suffered from severe and excessive stress. To deal with her incident stress that she experienced, she surrounded herself with her close family and friends. In a short time, with their positive encouragement, she was able to move past this experience and get her life back on track.
Next time you face incident stress in your life, look for the positive in that situation, meditate, and surround yourself with people who love and care about you. You will be amazed how you learn to handle any incident stress you might experience in your life.
Have you ever wondered why some people are happy and have peace of mind while others keep worrying? Why do some people’s life filled with worry while others filled with happiness and peace of mind? My e-book How to have peace of mind answers those questions and teaches you the scientific ways to control and overcome worry and have peace of mind.

Hiya Dia,
The worst think we can do when something stressful happens is to think about it a way that makes us feel bad, and then keep thinking those same thoughts. We do it all the time. If we have a car crash, we keep asking ourselves “what if I crash again?” and think thoughts of potential danger. But we can think thoughts of safety, just as easily. We just have to remember to do it.

Melody

Hi Dia,
This one is a new one to me, “Incident Stress”. However it has affected my life. I have had a fear of being lost. When I have to go somewhere and not sure where I am going I get a little stressed. Now i have learned that I can always turn around, or I will find my way back home sooner or later. Rob said it will, fear of the future.
When I was a teenager, I to wreaked a car. My father made me go with him when he got the new one and made me drive it home. Best thing he could have done for me.
Thank you for the tips, because we all have a little fear hidden away somewhere. Seeing the positive side of it does take the stress away.
Blessing,
Debbie

Dia recently posted..Dealing with Incident stress
Hi Dia,
Great post my friend. That brought me back to only one time that I could think of when that happened to me. My boss went on a rampage and started yelling and throwing things. I sat right next to him and the only thing that separated us was a glass wall. He was throwing things at me and hitting that glass wall. I thought he was mad at me but he was upset because the company wasn’t doing well. So I took it personally and ended up having an anxiety attack. I didn’t know what it was at that moment, I honestly thought I was having a heart attack. It was the worst experience in my life and took me several days to get over. As the saying goes, I wish I knew then what I know now I would have known how to handle it much better. I pray that never happens to me ever again.
Thanks for sharing these wonderful insights. I definitely know how I would handle that if it happened to me today.
Best to you,
Adrienne

Hey Dia, nice down-to-earth tips on handling stress in our lives. Meditation in particular does a good job of grounding me and helping me go through life more patiently (without always needing to overreact about everything that happens). Mindfulness is a good buffer between stimulus and response, allows us to go through life more deliberately.

Hey Dia,
You always come through for me. I had an incident recently, a little different than what you’ve described here, but I’m really having a hard time with it.
My anxiety is at an all time high and my worry for what will happen next is trying to consume me.
I’ve been spending my mornings in prayer and meditation and chanting peace and well being as my mantra throughout my days, but I’m still “suffering.”
My biggest struggle is time, ya know. When does the meditating and the prayer all kick it? I know it’ll happen but I’m just ready for it to go away.
Thanks for this!

Hey Dia,
Thanks for sharing great advice!
I hate incident stress whether it’s from me or not. I’m not good at dealing with stress and that’s why I try to stay away from it if at all possible. As hard as I try to stay away from it’s not always possible.
My love ones have stress and they need my help, advice, and someone to listen. For my love ones I’m always going to be there till the end. Whether I can help it or not stress is always going to be around me, but as you said it’s best for me to focus on the positive. It takes time but with practice you can center your thoughts around positive thoughts.
Just my 2 cents.
Keep working hard!
God bless,
William Veasley
